Test 3: Venice Canals | Introduction to Translation

Unlike other canals around the world, those in Venice are not man-made. What man has made is the land around the canals.

In the seventh century, this North Italian town was merely a series of tiny islands and mudflats. The form of the town gradually took shape with many of its buildings constructed directly over water, supported by massive foundations on the seabed. The canals between the houses were left untouched and, consequently, the only means of transport in Venice today is by boat. Whereas the traditional gondola has had no adverse effect, the vibrations caused by new motor boats are weakening the foundations of the city. This is not the only problem the city is facing. Over the last 1,000 years, Venice has sunk by around seven centimeters every century and, in the 20th century alone, it sank by around 24 centimeters. The level to which Venice has sunk is now considered alarming. Leaders of the Venetian city are, therefore, considering investigating in huge steel gates to block the floods in order to prevent it from being submerged.
