นายแพทย์ภุชงค์ วีรพลิน หัวหน้าสาธารณสุขจังหวัดแพร่กล่าวว่า เจ้าหน้าที่สาธารณสุขได้เตือนชาวบ้านว่าไม่ให้เดินลุยน้ำเท้าเปล่า พร้อมกับได้แจกรองเท้าบูทให้เพื่อป้องกันการติดเชื้อ แต่ประชาชนจำนวนมาก โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งเกษตรกรไม่ใส่รองเท้าดังกล่าว

Farmers ignore doctors' warnings

Leptospirosis, or Weil's disease, has killed 4 people, with over 200 more infected in Phrae Province because farmers have not heeded physicians' warnings.

Provincial Chief Medical Officer of Phrae Province, Dr. Puchong Veerapalin, said that public health officials had warned villagers against walking barefoot in water. Boots were distributed to help prevent infections but the majority of locals, especially farmers, did not wear them.

Most patients, numbering over 100, are from Song District. A smaller group comes from Nong Muang Khai and Mueang districts.

Phrae has been dealing with floods since June. On August 11 and 16, after heavy rains, the Yom River overflowed its banks, killing 3 people and 22,000 animals, devastating approximately 66,000 citizens' lives, and damaging nearly 31,700 acres of crop land as well as 40 roads and 28 bridges.

Damage is estimated at 80 million baht or 2.5 million US dollars.
