ตะกร้อเป็นกีฬาชนิดหนึ่งซึ่งเป็นที่นิยมในเอเซียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ มีหลักฐานปรากฏว่ามีการเล่นตะกร้อกันในประเทศไทยตั้งแต่ต้นสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ ในตอนแรก ลูกตะกร้อทำจากผ้า ต่อมามีการนำหนังสัตว์ หวาย พลาสติก และยางมาใช้ทำลูกตะกร้อแทน กีฬาชนิดนี้เล่นที่ไหนก็ได้ที่มีพื้นที่กว้างพอให้ผู้เล่นล้อมวงได้ จำนวนของผู้เล่นนั้นไม่จำกัด เล่นเป็นหมู่ หรือเดี่ยวก็ได้ ผู้เล่นจะใช้เท้า เข่าและศอก หรือแม้แต่ศีรษะในการเล่น จึงทำให้ได้บริหารทุกส่วนของร่างกาย การแข่งขันตะกร้อในปัจจุบัน เช่น ในกีฬาเอเชียนเกมส์ แตกต่างจากตะกร้อพื้นบ้านในประเทศไทยหลายประการ เช่น จำนวนผู้เล่นในทีมจะกำหนดไว้แน่นอน และต้องเล่นในสนามมาตรฐานเท่านั้น

Takraw is a popular sport in Southeast Asia. There is record of it being played in Thailand since the early Ratanakosin Period when the ball was made of cloth. Later animal hide, rattan, plastic, and rubber were used. This a sport that can be played in any space big enough for the players to form a circle. There is no limit to the number of players; one can play alone or in a groups. In takraw, you can use the foot, knee, elbow, or even the head to hit the ball, giving good exercise to every part of the body. Competitions nowadays such as in the Asian Games are different from traditional Thai takraw in many ways, for instance the number of players is fixed and the court must be standard.
