As a plain citizen, she discovered while travelling abroad during this period, her position was extraordinary. Everywhere she was treated with almost hysterical deference. The Roosevelt name had almost an hypnotic power overseas. This never changed no matter how many return trips she made to the same place. When she attended the Geneva, Switzerland meeting of her UN Human Rights Commission in December 1947, it seemed as though the entire city turned out to greet her. Everywhere she stopped traffic. Whenever she emerged outdoors from her hotel, the cheering was reminiscent of the adulation paid a football hero in the United States.

It was the same when she journeyed to London in April 1948 as the guest of the Pilgrim Society to unveil the ten-foot-high standing statue of Franklin in Grosvenor Square. The king and the queen were at her side and Attlee and Churchill spoke. Every speaker tried to outdo the others. Attlee sent her a note the next day: “I wish I could have done more justice to the President in my speech, but I shall never be an orator.”
