สงกรานต์เป็นคำภาษาสันสกฤตมีความหมายว่าการเคลื่อนที่ ตามโหราศาสตร์ไทยนั้น พระอาทิตย์จะเคลื่อนเข้าเข้าสู่จักรราศีใหม่ในวันนี้ ดังนั้นวันสงกรานต์จึงถือเป็นวันปีใหม่ตามประเพณีไทย ซึ่งเริ่มต้นในวันที่ 13 เมษายนของทุกปี และกินระยะเวลา 3 วัน เทศกาลสงกรานต์ยังเป็นโอกาสให้สมาชิกในครอบครัวได้กลับมาพบปะกันด้วย ในช่วงวันหยุดยาวนี้ ผู้คนจากชนบทที่เข้ามาทำงานในกรุงเทพมักจะเดินทางกลับบ้านเพื่อฉลองเทศกาลนี้ การฉลองสงกรานต์จะเริ่มในช่วงเช้าโดยชาวไทยจะไปวัดเพื่อทำถวายอาหารแด่พระ สงฆ์และร่วมพิธีสรงน้ำพระพุทธรูป จากนั้น จะไปเยี่ยมพ่อแม่และบรรดาผู้ใหญ่เพื่อรดน้ำแสดงความเคารพและขอพร ในช่วงบ่าย ผู้คนจะออกไปเล่นสาดน้ำกันอย่างสนุกสนาน จะเห็นได้ว่าน้ำมีบทบาทสำคัญในเทศกาลสงกรานต์เพราะเชื่อกันว่าน้ำจะชะล้างโชคร้าย ทั้งหลายออกไปได้ และเนื่องจากเดือนเมษายนเป็นเดือนที่ร้อนที่สุดของปีในเมืองไทย ใคร ๆ ก็รู้สึกสนุกที่จะโดนสาดน้ำจนเปียกปอนในวันสงกรานต์

Translation 1: Sample for Discussion

Songkran is Sanskrit for "transition." Thai astrology sees the sun entering a new zodiac on this day and so considers Songkran the new year in Thai custom, beginning on April 13 of every year and lasting three days. The Songkran festivals are also an occasion for family reunions. During this long holiday, province natives working in Bangkok return home to celebrate. Events begin the morning when Thais give food to monks and bathe Buddha images at the temple. Then, they visit with parents and elder family members to pour water on their hands to show respect and to ask for their blessing. In the afternoon it is water splashing time for everyone. Water plays a key role during Songkran because it is thought to cleanse ill fortune and, since April is Thailand's hottest month, everybody enjoys getting drenched.

Translation 2: Sample for Discussion

Songkran, Sanskrit for "passage," in Thai astrology is when the sun passes into another zodiac, marking the new year in the Thai tradition that begins every April 13 and lasts three days. The Songkran season is a time for family to get together. During the long holiday, upcountry folks working in Bangkok travel back to their hometowns to celebrate. Festivities start in the morning at the temple with food almsgiving to monks and bathing the Buddha statues. Afterward, people visit parents' and elderly relatives' homes to show respect and ask for blessings by trickling scented water over them. Afternoons are for splashing water play. Water, as can be seen, runs through Songkran as it is believed to wash away bad luck and, this being April, the hottest month of the year, everyone loves to get thrown a good souse.
