ABSTRACT

The application of Variable Message Sign (VMS) or Changeable Message Sign (CMS) has been widely recognized in many countries as an important element of traffic management system. In Bangkok Metropolitan Area, although basic traffic information is typically shown to motorists via the VMS system, it is yet unknown to what extent the motorists in Bangkok perceive and understand messages provided on the VMS boards. This paper, therefore, presents an exploratory investigation on how the advent of VMS affects motorists in Bangkok. Two main objectives are sought in the present study. First, motorist’s awareness and perception on the VMS will be explored and verified if they are aligned with what the operators intend to present. The second objective of the paper involves an investigation of the level of message content in VMS. A preliminary finding shows that many motorists in Bangkok found the information currently listed on VMS boards to be comprehensible and useful. However, it is somewhat unclear if the application of VMS system would be beneficial in alleviating the chronic traffic congestion in Bangkok. In terms of message content in VMS, it is found that whether or not motorists will make a diversion depends primarily on the amount of information provided on the VMS. However, some information may be irrelevant or, in other words, does not significantly affect driver’s decision on VMS. Finally, it is hoped that the findings from the present study could shed some light into understanding driver’s behavior and perception on the VMS, which could further help local traffic engineers manage traffic condition more efficiently.
