ABSTRACT

Using expressway to travel into downtown area is one of the travel alternatives for Bangkok travelers.  At present, however, the traffic demand for expressway in some locations sometimes exceeds the system’s capacity, leading to severe traffic congestion problem. Hence, there is a need to investigate potential measures to cope with the aforementioned problems. The objective of this paper is to investigate the possibilities of applying management measures, particularly the ramp metering strategy, on Bangkok expressway. Lessons learned and experiences from other countries are considered in the present study. In addition, a traffic simulation model, PARAMICS is utilized as a case study with the objective to assess the ramp metering measure on the expressway. Results from the study could be used as one of the decision tools to set any traffic policy in the future.
