Autobiography is a kind of writing important to both writers and readers. Writers value the way autobiography gives meaning to their experience, helping them come to terms with important events in their past and even discover significance in seemingly insignificant experiences. By telling their own stories, autobiographers get to represent themselves to the world: They “re-invent” their own identities, deciding what is meaningful in their lives and what is trivial. Autobiography also helps writers locate themselves as part of a particular time, place, and culture.

Readers take special pleasure in the engaging stories offered in autobiography. Part of this pleasure comes from seeing their own experience reflected in another’s writing. But part comes as well from recognizing otherness, from seeing the many different ways people live and behave toward one another. Some autobiographies, in fact, challenge readers’ certainties, surprising or even startling readers. Reading autobiography reminds us how much alike and yet how different from each other we are.

Autobiography derives from a particular way of imagining the self as the product of experience, culture, and history. From Western culture, then, we have come to see autobiography as a series of events—rituals or rites of passage—that challenge and change us, that affirm our sense of individuality and, at the same time, make us feel a part of a larger community.
