Students + Portfolio

This one-week workshop will focus on the recent proposal by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to ban parking garages in areas adjacent to mass transit stations. This represents a significant rupture in the history of commercial architecture of Bangkok, which since the 1960s has been defined by massive parking structures. It also a shift in urban pattern from an automobile based dispersed city, much like Los Angeles, Houston or Atlanta, to a mass-transit oriented metropolis like New York, Tokyo or Hong Kong. This workshop will investigate the future of large-scale commercial architecture in Bangkok as the city shifts from automobile to mass transit.

This workshop will consider the new types of commercial architecture that will be possible in Bangkok with the BMA proposal in various competing nodes in Bangkok’s mass transit network. Students will choose both a unique district as viable locations for a future Central Business District for the city, and will design a new commercial architecture where automobiles will be a secondary means of transportation. Design proposals will formed by examining New York’s two business districts – Wall Street and Midtown – and important commercial structures in the city.
