Consolidating Skills for Non-Science Graduates

Course Description

This course is aimed at helping students expand their knowledge of and proficiency in English. It is an integrated course with the emphasis on productive skills, namely speaking and writing, and interactive communication through the use of English as a medium for communicating ideas concerning the social sciences and humanities. It is intended for students who have already mastered basic English sentences but need to learn how to use these patterns to help them understand and convey the kind of information they would need both for their graduate studies and their professional careers. The learning activities are designed for use not only in a traditional classroom context but also for the purpose of self-study on their own and at their own pace in the Self-Access Learning Center and the Multi-Media Room. It is hoped that students will develop greater motivation and interest as well as a sense of involvement in the learning process itself.

 

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, the students should be able to

  1. Recognize the grammatical structured needed to understand and convey information related to their graduate studies and their professions.
  2. Master the language required for socializing and the language of introduction in both formal and informal situations.
  3. Deduce the meaning of unknown lexical items from context by using context clues.
  4. Understand paragraph organization and textual coherence.
  5. Recognize facts, opinions and attitudes through critical reading.
  6. Understand news items, magazine articles and editorials.
  7. Express opinions both orally and in writing.
  8. Master discussion techniques.
  9. Interpret information from diagrams, tables and chart into written form.
  10. Give oral presentations on a specific area of interest.
  11. Write a paragraph of definition, description, classification, and be able to use the language of comparison and contrast.
  12. Understand and practice the language and techniques involved in job applications and job interviews.

Goals

  1. To review and consolidate students’ grasp of English grammar and syntax (e.g. tense, parallel structures, dangling modifiers, etc.)
  2. To enable students to use the appropriate form of the language within the context of a comprehensive set of communicative functions.
  3. To enable students to develop critical thinking in relation to their particular field of study.
  4. To encourage students’ motivation, interest and involvement in the learning process.
  5. To help students gain more confidence in using the English language.

 

Types of Activity

  1. Individual work: writing assignment, reading assignment.
  2. Pair-work: dialogues practice.
  3. Group-work: group discussion, reporting information.
  4. Self-study: doing tasks on software programs, listening comprehension and note-taking.

 

Classroom Activities

  1. Oral practice: dialogues, discussions and oral presentations.
  2. Writing practice at a sentence and paragraph level.
  3. Skimming for main ideas.
  4. Scanning for details.
  5. Analyzing a writer’s opinions and attitudes.
  6. Listening practice through dialogues and

 

Self-Study Activities

  1. Listening practice in the Self-Access Learning Center via cassette tapes and videos.
  2. Writing practice via computer-based exercises i.e. authoring programs, the World Wide Web and e-mail.
  3. Reading practice on line through cyber magazine and the Internet.

 

Instructional Materials

  1. Course Textbook.
  2. Handouts: reading materials, grammar review, exercises on context clues.
  3. Computer – based exercises.
  4. Listening Materials: news articles, short passages, short reports, dialogues.

 

Instructional Aids

  1. Tape recorder, cassette tapes, television, video tapes.
  2. Computer software.
  3. Overhead projector.

 

Assessment Tasks

  1. A well-organized passage of about 200-300 words relating to the topics given by using appropriate sentence connectors.
  2. A 10-15 minute oral presentation of a topic of interest
  3. Reading comprehension
  4. Listening comprehension
  5. Quiz on vocabulary and context clues.

 

Course Evaluation

<60%= U (unsatisfactory)

>60%= S (satisfactory)
