Cairo – A buffalo caused two Egyptian passenger trains to collide at high speed south of Cairo, killing 18 people and wounding 39, the Health Ministry announced yesterday.

The first passenger train stopped after hitting the buffalo, which had wandered onto the track late on Saturday, and was then rear-ended by a second train going at full speed.

The ministry said the injured, most of whom were in critical condition, were rushed to four medical centers nearby. An eyewitness said the first train hit the buffalo and its owner. The train that caused the collision was headed from Cairo to the southern city of Assuit. Dozens of ambulances rushed to the scene, with rescue workers trying to use a crane to lift one wagon from on top of the other in the hope to find bodies in the wreckage.
