Debate

The end-of-semester debates for this class will be on Tuesday, March 20, 2012. There will be four teams total: two teams of four students, and two teams of three students. We will determine teams and topics in Tuesday, March 6, 2012 class. 


Debate Rules

Rules for debate are adapted from the World Schools Debating Championship (WSDC) rules and style. Before the debate, each team will inform the judges the order in which they will be speaking. During the debate, each team presents a case supported by arguments and examples.


4-Person Teams: Two teams, each consisting of four students, will be debating each other according to this format:

Motion: Abortion should be legalized.

Proposition: Patcharachuta, Natyada, Nisagorn, and Porapat

Opposition: Chairat, Thanyalak, Chakrit, and Natthaya

Timekeeper: Ratchakan

First Speaker, Proposition Defines the topic, establishes the issues for the debate, outlines the proposition case, announces the case division between the speakers, and presents his or her part of the proposition case

First Speaker, Opposition
Challenges the definition if necessary, presents an alternative definition if the definition is challenged, responds to the proposition case, outlines the opposition case, announces the case division, and presents his or her part of the opposition case 4 minutes
Second Speaker, Proposition
Deals with the definition if it has been challenged, responds to the opposition case, and continues with the proposition case as outlined by the first speaker
4 minutes
Second Speaker, Opposition
Deals with the definition if it is still in issue, responds to the proposition case, and continues with the opposition case as outlined by the first speaker
4 minutes
Third Speaker, Proposition
Deals with the definition if it is still in issue, and responds to the other team's case, rebutting the opposition's points and defending the proposition's
3 minutes
Third Speaker, Opposition
Deals with the definition if it is still in issue, and responds to the other team's case, rebutting the proposition's points and defending the opposition's

Fourth Speaker, Proposition Sums up the debate from the proposition team's viewpoint, including a response to the opposition's overall case and a summary of the proposition's case

Judging: Each debate will be judged by three people: one person from each of the two teams not debating that round and the instructor.




Timekeeper: A timekeeper will be assigned for each debate. He/she will give the following signals: 1 minute left, 30 seconds left, and time up.
