Officers at the Kantharalak District checkpoint were on alert for a suspect red Toyota pickup with a Khon Kaen license plate number bor ror 9285 transporting illegal logs. As the truck approached, at around 1 a.m., the officer motioned for the driver to pull over but he instead accelerated and fled the scene, prompting the police to give chase.

When he neared Chang Mang Village in Sam Subdistrict, the driver parked the pickup, ran out and disappeared into the forest, leaving a man in the vehicle later identified as Piyarach Jitrawong, aged 23.

Piyarach told the police he was the lookout for the driver, Rangsi Kitrungruang, who took on the logs at a village and was going to deliver them to a dealer in Kantharalak, identifying their hirer as Chaiyan Pailoon.
