1: Sample for Critique Customs seize near 10 tons of smuggled oranges
Customs officials and Laem Chabang Quarantine Station officers seized 7 containers of over 96,000 kg. of foreign oranges worth over 4 million baht ($12,600) after finding, upon inspection, that they were not Chinese imports but rather grown in Spain and Egypt; the importer had falsified the country of origin to avoid import duties. The Thai Customs Director-General said all were restricted items under the Plant Quarantine Act B.E. 2507 (1964) as they are uninspected foreign produce and pose disease risks. The Customs Department is blacklisting this importer to prevent repeat offenses. Thailand and China have an FTA (free trade agreement) for mutual tax-free imports and exports, while certificates of other origin countries are subject to import duties of 30%. |

Customs chief said that according to the Plant Quarantine Act
B.E. 2507, the confiscated goods are illegal because they have
been imported from countries that have not yet been certified
as free from epidemics. The Department of Customs and Excise
will blacklist the importer to prevent repeat offenses.
Thailand and China have signed a bilateral FTA agreement under
which all imports and exports between the two countries are
tax-free. Produce from other countries of origin is subject to
a 30% tax. |
