Postoperative irradiation
สำหรับผู้ป่วยมะเร็งลำไส้ใหญ่ส่วน
rectum ที่เป็น resectable high risk patients ด้วยปริมาณรังสีประมาณ 50
Gy ใน 5 - 5 1/2 สัปดาห์
พบว่าจะสามารถลดอัตราการกำเริบของโรคเฉพาะที่ลงอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ
แต่อัตราการแพร่กระจายของโรคและอัตราการรอดชีวิตไม่ได้ดีขึ้นกว่าการทำผ่าตัดอย่างเดียว
ส่วนการให้ adjuvant postoperative irradiation
ร่วมกับ chemotherapy
พบว่าการกำเริบของโรคเฉพาะที่
disease-free survival และ overall survival ดีขึ้น
โดยเฉพาะในกลุ่มที่ให้ 5FU base
พร้อมกันไปกับการฉายรังสี(18,19)
