The Great Wall of China is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. It is generally believed to have been built about 2,200 years ago during the rule of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty, but in fact, there is evidence of its first sections having been constructed in the fifth century B.C.E. Its main purpose was to fortify the northern borders of the Chinese Empire against invasions form various nomadic tribes. The 8,800-kilometer wall has many sections and was built in different periods, taking several hundred years to complete. The labor used in its construction consisted of farmers, convicts, and slaves. Thousands died in the process from exhaustion and hunger. It is said that the bodies were buried right there beneath the walls. The Great Wall is one of the largest man-made objects in the world but the claim that it can be seen from the moon with the naked eye is not true.
